How to Play Teen Patti: Your First Ten Hands

Rules are one thing; knowing what to do at your first table is another. A practical walkthrough.

To play Teen Patti, put the boot in the pot, take your three cards, play blind for a round or two while the pot is small, then see your cards and decide: pack weak hands, bet steadily with pairs or better, and ask for a show when only one opponent remains and your hand is strong.

Before hand one

  1. Learn the six hand types — trail, pure sequence, sequence, colour, pair, high card. Our rankings page has a one-glance table.
  2. Agree the boot, pot limit and house rules if you’re at home.
  3. Decide your budget for the whole session.

Hands 1–3: Play blind, watch everyone

Play blind at the minimum stake. You’re paying a little to watch how others bet — who raises often, who packs quickly. Blind bets are half the price of seen bets, so this is cheap information.

Hands 4–6: Start seeing your cards earlier

See your cards on your first or second turn. Use this rough guide:

Colour or sequenceBet steadily
Pure sequence or trailBuild the pot slowly — don’t scare everyone away

Hands 7–8: Try a side show

When you’re seen and unsure whether you beat the player before you, ask for a side show. It costs a bet, but it can save you from a long, expensive hand.

Hands 9–10: Ask for a show

When only one opponent remains and you hold a pair or better, consider paying for the show. If they’ve been betting hard blind, they may hold anything — that’s the thrill.

What to avoid as a beginner

  • Staying blind for too many rounds in a growing pot.
  • Calling every bet with a high card.
  • Raising to “scare” people with nothing. Bluffs work best when rare.
  • Chasing losses with bigger bets. See beginner mistakes.
